Why Doing Good is Good for Business

He’s done it all. He’s uber-successful, he’s well-liked, he has great influence, he disrupts, he leads, he takes adventures no one else has taken….

That’s Sir Richard Branson, an entrepreneur and change-maker if ever there was one. He is regarded as one of the most successful business people in the world, not just because of how much money he made but for the legacy he creates in so many daring ways.

The most interesting thing, I think, is what he says after ‘having it all’.

What he says in this fast-changing time we’re in now is an interesting example of how a part of our world (I hope you are in it) is starting to flip its priorities; it’s setting new priorities that benefit all and add greater meaning to our existence.

I believe that we are starting to move from the profit-driven world to the new ‘meaning-driven’ world. Yes, profits still matter to businesses because financial capacity is what enables businesses to deliver more of the special value to their customers. But we are now seeing that there’s much more. Businesses that succeed in a true sense today are going for more. More than just to maximize the profits.

And here are some quotes from Sir Richard that highlight the shift.

On humanity…

How to treat our world is a reflection of our humanity, our intelligence, our conscience and ultimately, our very survival. The way in which we co-exist with our natural environment, strengthen fragile societies, and support vulnerable populations is the very foundation of a sustainable future – business or otherwise.

On the new shift…

As power shifts from the hands of central authorities to the hands of the people, movements are becoming more powerful and moving more rapidly than ever before.

Role of the wealthy…

Those of us who have been fortunate enough to acquire wealth must play a role in looking at how we use these means to make the world a far better place. It’s not about martyrdom, it’s about balance and compassion and figuring out how we can build new ways to live together, as a truly global village, that allow everyone to prosper.

On Financial Success…

I often say, ‘Have fun and the money will come.’ I still believe that, but now, I am saying, ‘Do good, have fun and the money will come.’

On Taking Care of People…

I’ve always believed that by taking care of people in my companies the rest will take care of itself.

On Taking Responsibility…

It should no longer be just about typical ‘corporate social responsibility’ (or that horrible acronym CSR) where the ‘responsibility’ is usually the realm of a small team buried in a basement office – now it should be about every single person in a business taking responsibility to make a difference in everything they do, at work and in their personal lives.

On Business for Good…

Never has there been a more exciting time for all of us to explore this next great frontier where the boundaries between work and higher purpose are merging into one, where doing good really is good for business.

How to Create Great Impact…

The great thing is that many entrepreneurial enterprises and businesses all over the world are now doing this instinctively and people everywhere are realising that they truly can make a difference every day, no matter how small the scale. In fact, a good socially aware business doesn’t have to be big to make an impact – it just has to have the right people in place.

On the Power of Small…

Ordinary people have enormous power – let them unleash it.

These quotes inspire, don’t they?

So let’s just Imagine a world where every business leader believes in these ideas. Businesses, small and big, in their own different ways, creating positive change, nurturing the people they employ, caring for the people they touch, solving the problems for many others…

This is the world we really can be part of, tapping into amazing new possibilities and meaningful connections that are made possible through the power of advancing technologies and online media.

And you can be the one to lead it to.

As Sir Richard says, ‘ordinary people have enormous power’. Let’s unleash it!
